A major omnibus ethics reform package received a drastic rewrite from the Governors veto pen on Tuesday, August 26, putting the reform measure in potential jeopardy.
The ethics reform legislation, House Bill 824, was approved with unanimous support in both the Illinois Senate and House, and was touted by good-government organizations.

Week in Review: July 21 – 25, 2008 |

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. Although $1.4 billion has been vetoed from the state budget, senators do not expect to be returning to Springfield anytime soon to address the reductions made by Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
The decision by the Senates Democrat leadership not to take up the budget cuts may mark the first time in history that a Governors spending vetoes wont be reviewed and voted on by the Senate. That has frustrated and disappointed many Republican senators. |

Week in Review: June 23 – 27, 2008 |

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. While legislators continued their summer recess, new developments emerged concerning the state budget this week, which legislative leaders - including Senate Republican Leader Frank Watson - have been working on since session's end.
On Tuesday, June 24 Governor Rod Blagojevich said he would dramatically cut the state budget unless the Illinois House approved several revenue sources to offset a nearly $2 billion gap between state spending and revenues. A deadline was given for the House to act by July 9, the date the state will not have the revenue to pay certain bills. State Comptroller Dan Hynes reaffirmed the time crunch, sending a letter on June 26 to state officials cautioning that failure to approve a budget by July 10 could result in missed paychecks for state employees.
