SENATE WEEK IN REVIEW: May 7-11, 2007 |

SPRINGFIELD The Governors proposed $7.6 billion tax on business and consumers was overwhelmingly rejected, and hundreds of citizens from across Illinois vehemently protested the lack of action on skyrocketing utility rates in legislative action during the week of May 7-11, according to State Sen. Matt Murphy.
After debating the gross receipts tax (GRT) for eight hours during a Committee of the Whole meeting on May 9, the House of Representatives soundly defeated the Governors plan in a test vote May 10. Not one member voted in support of the GRT, 107 members voted against it and seven members voted present. |

Senate Week in Review: April 30 – May 4 |

IL As criticism of the Governors proposed gross receipts tax on
business continues to mount, Senate Republicans formally declared their
opposition to the proposal in a Senate Resolution introduced Thursday,
said State Senator Matt Murphy.
Senate
Resolution 167 is similar to a measure debated by the House of
Representatives earlier in the week that received widespread support
from both Republican and Democrat lawmakers. Senate Republicans are
encouraging their Democrat colleagues to join them in co-sponsoring the
resolution and express their opposition to the controversial tax, which
experts caution could have a negative impact on
Illinois employers, economy and consumers.
