Points to underfunding of programs to help mentally ill, rape victims
SPRINGFIELD, IL Many Illinois taxpayers working in the private sector have experienced layoffs or stagnant, even decreasing, wages in this economic crisis, according to state Senator Matt Murphy (R-Palatine).
However, for the 95% of state employees who are members of a union, wages will go up 6-8 percent this year, said Murphy. In fact, within the Department of Human Services (DHS), the 97 percent of employees who are unionized will receive raises costing taxpayers approximately $56 million.
Meanwhile, the Springfield leaders have proposed a budget that cuts $55 million from DHS programs for the mentally ill and rape victims.
"In recent years employees have been added to the state employee union rolls at an increasing rate," Senator Murphy said "This trend is tying our hands in crafting a budget that truly reflects the people's priorities."
Senate Bill 3934 would redefine eligibility for membership in a state employee union, effectively reducing labor costs for the state and freeing up revenue for other expenditures, such as programs for the mentally ill and rape victims.
